Mattan in Easton's Bible Dictionary gift. (1.) A priest of Baal, slain before his altar during the reformation under Jehoiada (2 Kings 11:18). (2.) The son of Eleazar, and father of Jacob, who was the father of Joseph, the husband of the Virgin Mary (Matt. 1:15). (3.) The father of Shephatiah (Jer. 38:1).

Mattan in Fausset's Bible Dictionary 1. Baal's priest slain by Jehoiada "before the altars "judicially, at the reformation after Athaliah's idolatrous reign (2 Kings 11:18; 2 Chronicles 23:17). She probably had brought him from Samaria to introduce the Baal worship of her father Ahab into the court of Jehoram her husband, Jehoshaphat's son (2 Chronicles 21:6; 2 Chronicles 21:13). 2. (2) The father of Shephatiah a contemporary and persecutor of Jeremiah (Jer 38:1), one of those who put Jeremiah into Malechiah's dungeon (38:6).

According to September 2005 there were 2683 citizens in Israel with the name Mattan, with only 183 of them are females. Other popular given names are Mattanel and Mattaniah or Mattaniahu, all meaning "Gift of God".
