Bible Names H-M: Hammelech

Hammelech in Easton's Bible Dictionary the king's, the father of Jerahmeel, mentioned in Jer. 36:26. Some take this word as a common noun, "the king", and understand that Jerahmeel was Jehoiakim's son. Probably, however, it is to be taken as a proper name.

Hammelech in Fausset's Bible Dictionary Jeremiah 36:26; Jeremiah 38:6. Jehoiakim at this time (the fifth year of his reign) had no grown up son. Jeconiah his successor was then but eleven (2 Kings 23:36; compare 2 Kings 24:8). We must not then, with Smith's Bible Dictionary, translated "the king," but as a proper name, Hammelech, father of Jerahmeel and Malchiah.

Hammelech in Hitchcock's Bible Names a king; a counselor

Hammelech in Naves Topical Bible -Name of a man, or possibly only an appellation, meaning "the king," Jer 36:26; 38:6

Hammelech in Smiths Bible Dictionary lit. "the king," unnecessarily rendered in the Authorized Version as a proper name. Jer 36:26; 38:6

Hammelech in the Bible Encyclopedia - ISBE ham'-e-lek (ha-melekh, "the king"): Wrongly translated as a proper name in the King James Version. It should be rendered "the king," as in the American Standard Revised Version (Jer 36:26; 38:6).

Hammelech Scripture - Jeremiah 36:26 But the king commanded Jerahmeel the son of Hammelech, and Seraiah the son of Azriel, and Shelemiah the son of Abdeel, to take Baruch the scribe and Jeremiah the prophet: but the LORD hid them.

Hammelech Scripture - Jeremiah 38:6 Then took they Jeremiah, and cast him into the dungeon of Malchiah the son of Hammelech, that [was] in the court of the prison: and they let down Jeremiah with cords. And in the dungeon [there was] no water, but mire: so Jeremiah sunk in the mire.
