esh-Sham. Damascus was the capital of the kingdom of Syria (Aram). It was located at an important junction of trade routes.

In the Roman province of Syria, Damascus belonged to the region of Decapolis. An officer of Aretas king of Nabataeans also had authority there

And he was also delivered into the hand of the king of Israel, who smote him with a great slaughter. 

1 Kings 20:34 - And [Benhadad] said unto him, The cities, which my father took from thy father, I will restore; and thou shalt make streets for thee inDamascus, as my father made in Samaria. Then [said Ahab], I will send thee away with this covenant. So he made a covenant with him, and sent him away.
