Sabines
Ancient people of central Italy, dwelling mainly in the Sabine Hills
(Apennines) northeast of Rome. Very little information has been found concerning them.
They were probably Oscan-speaking (Sabelli). Livy wrote of the rape of the Sabine women to supply wives for the womanless
followers of Romulus. They were overthrown by the Romans about 290 BC.
