Farmer Figure
Many plebeians were farmers, and during the early republic the farms were
very small and usually run by a single family with one or two slaves. The ox was
the single most important animal on a farm, pulling ploughs and carts. Farming
became a very important industry for the Romans. They eventually developed
effective ways of making farming very productive. They brought new methods and
tools and spread new crops, fruit and vegetables throughout the world.
