Darius I Enthroned at Persepolis
Darius I Relief - Enthroned at Persepolis
Darius is seen here seated on his throne at Persepolis, which was chosen as his new capital of his empire replacing Pasargadae. many nations came to bring tribute to Darius as seen in the many carvings at the stairway. All of his magnificent buildings were embellished with beautiful sculptures. Alexander the Great burned the place detesting it.
The magnificent palace complex at Persepolis was founded by Darius the Great around 518 BC., although more than a century passed before it was finally completed. Persepolis was called by the Greek historian Diodorus Siculus "the richest city under the sun, with storehouses filled with gold, silver, and all kinds of riches." Under Darius, the Persian Empire was at its greatest extent. It reached as far as India. In the West, Greece was always a thorn to Darius. The Persians were defeated by the Greeks at the battle of Marathon in 490 B.C. Later, Alexander the Great conquered the Persian Empire in 330 B.C. When Alexander the Great and his army looted and burned Persepolis in 331 B.C. they did a very thorough job. According to the Greek historian Plutarch Alexander carried away the treasures of Persepolis on "20,000 mules and 5,000 camels." The Seated Darius Relief is important in the study of Biblical Archaeology and the Persian Period.
