Bible Names N-Z: Nahor

Nahor in Easton's Bible Dictionary snorting. (1.) The father of Terah, who was the father of Abraham (Gen. 11:22-25; Luke 3:34). (2.) A son of Terah, and elder brother of Abraham (Gen. 11:26, 27; Josh. 24:2, R.V.). He married Milcah, the daughter of his brother Haran, and remained in the land of his nativity on the east of the river Euphrates at Haran (Gen. 11:27-32). A correspondence was maintained between the family of Abraham in Canaan and the relatives in the old ancestral home at Haran till the time of Jacob. When Jacob fled from Haran all intercourse between the two branches of the family came to an end (Gen. 31:55). His grand-daughter Rebekah became Isaac's wife (24:67).

Nahor in Fausset's Bible Dictionary 1. Abraham's grandfather. 2. Abraham's brother. (See ABRAHAM.) Nahor was his elder brother; married Milcah his niece, Haran's daughter, who bore eight sons (Genesis 11:26-29; Genesis 22:20-24). His concubine Reumah bore Zebah and Maachah (whose descendants David came in contact with: 1 Chronicles 18:8; 1 Chronicles 19:6), Gaham and Thahash. Bethuel his son was Rebekah's father. She formed a tie between Abraham's seed and the original Mesopotamian family. Laban and Jacob's connection renewed it, then it closes. Laban, with polytheistic notions, distinguishes between his god "the god of Nahor" and "the God of Abraham," Jacob's God (Genesis 31:3; Genesis 31:5; Genesis 31:19; Genesis 31:29; Genesis 31:42; Genesis 31:49; Genesis 31:53; Joshua 24:2), "the God of Abraham and the Fear of Isaac." El Naura is a town on Euphrates above Hit.

Nahor in Smiths Bible Dictionary (snorting), the name of two persons in the family of Abraham. 1. His grandfather; the son of Serug and father of Terah. Ge 11:22-25 (B.C. 2174.) 2. Grandson of the preceding son of Terah and brother of Abraham and Haran. Ge 11:26,27 (B.C. 2000.) The order of the ages of the family of Terah is not improbably inverted in the narrative; in which case Nahor instead of being younger than Abraham, was really older. He married Milcah, the daughter of his brother Haran; and when Abraham and Lot migrated to Canaan, Nahor remained behind in the land of his birth, on the eastern side of the Euphrates.

Nahor in Wikipedia Nahor (or Nachor) (Heb. נָחֹור) is the name of two persons in Torah who were both descended from Arpachshad: The son of Serug and father of Terah, who was the father of Abraham. According to Jubilees, his mother was Milcah daughter of Kaber, and he married 'Iyoska, daughter of Nesteg of the kin of Ur Kasdim (the son of Arpachshad for whom Ur was named). Nahor was 29 when his son Terah was born, and lived to the age of 148. The son of Terah and grandson of Nahor son of Serug, and the elder brother of Abraham. He married his niece Milcah, the daughter of his brother Haran and the sister of his nephew Lot. This Nahor lived in the land of his nativity on the east of the river Euphrates at Haran. He was the father of Bethuel and grandfather of Laban and Rebecca; Rebecca became the wife of Isaac son of Abraham. Nahor's great-granddaughters through Laban, Rebecca's nieces Rachel and Leah, became the wives of Jacob son of Isaac...
