Ancient Roman horseman from the Trajan column. Wears a squamata or shirt made of metal chain armor, a species of coat of mail; oval shield, helmet with ring and chin strap and a sword worn on the right side.
Merovingian Knight Attributed To 8th Century Merovingian Knight Attributed To 8th Century
Merovingian knight from a bas-relief in the church of Saint Julien at Brioude, France. Attributed to the 8th century but has a general character of the tenth or eleventh century. The warrior is shown wearing a hauberk called Jazerans or Korazins. Without any leggings but with sleeves that reached the wrist, the warrior also wears a conical casque with chin piece.

Scandinavian warrior from 11th or 12th century. From a sculpture in wood on the door of a church in Iceland, preserved in the Museum of Copenhagen. Equipment is remarkable by the conical casque with nose-piece and neck-covering and by the curved sword or glaive which the warrior bears along with the buckler on his right shoulder.

German warrior from manuscript of German Aenid of Henry of Waldeck, 13th century. The helm has a crest, the buskler is heart-shaped, the armour is in plates and made of leather. The horse is also heavily armoured completely with trellised and studded with head of nails.

French warrior of the 13th century from a champlevé enamel on copper, in high relief, 4 inches in height, in the collection of M. le Comte de Nieuwerkerke. It is alternately enamelled in blue and gilt and in shades of citron and orange. The sword-guard has the two ends turned towards the point of the sword, the helm is crested, the armour covered with the Waffenrock and the horse is caparisoned.

The plain bassinet is noticeable, on the account of the frontlet, a kind of vizor which resembles the shade or peak on modern caps. The Gothic capitals is use from 1200 to 1360, shows that the canvas cannot date later than 14th century.
