Hosanna

"Save we pray": the multitude's cry at Christ's triumphal entry into Jerusalem (Matthew 21:9; Matthew 21:15; Mark 11:9-10; John 12:18). Taken from Psalm 118, which they were wont to recite at the feast of tabernacles in "the great Hallel" (Psalm 113-118), in responses with the priest, while they waved willow and palm branches with rejoicings. The seventh or last day of the feast was called "the Great Hosanna." The boughs too were called hosannas. They often transferred the joyous usages of this feast to other occasions of gladness, as that of our Lord's approach in triumph to His capital. Feasts, on the prophetic significance of the Hosanna cry and the feast of tabernacles which is especially associated with consummated salvation). Hebrews 9:28; Revelation 7:9-10; Israel shall join the Hosanna cry and say, "Blessed be the King that cometh in the name of the Lord" (Luke 19:38; Luke 13:35; Psalm 118:25-26; Isaiah 12:1-3). (See FEASTS.)
