Egypt knew that her turn was coming soon. Out of desperation king Hoshea of Israel made an agreement with the Pharaoh of Egypt (So). When the Assyrian kjng Shalmaneser V heard of this he immediately gathered his army and assaulted the walls of Samaria. The besieged city was strong and held out for 3 long years, in fact Shalmaneser V died that year and one of his generals came to the throne. The general’s name was Sargon II.
Note: In 670 B.C. the Assyrian king Essarhaddon conquered Egypt and defeated Tirhakah, king of Ethiopia (II Kings 19:9).
