Events in Athens During Paul's Second Missionary Journey

#7 Then when the Jews from Thessalonica heard, they came to Berea, but Paul escaped and went to Athens, the intellectual center of Greece. While he was waiting for Silas and Timothy to arrive, he noticed that the city was full of idols. He preached in the synagogue and the marketplace and some Greek philosophers came and desired to hear him at the forum (Areopagus). Paul stood in their midst and preached a magnificent message about "The Unknown God". He concluded by saying,

Acts 17:30-31 "Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent, "because He has appointed a day on which He will judge the world in righteousness by the Man whom He has ordained. He has given assurance of this to all by raising Him from the dead."

(See Acts 17:16-34)

Matthew 16:18 "And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it."

Jesus promised that He would build His church and that the "gates of Hades" would not prevail against it. Paul had set out this second time, around 51 A.D. to re-visit those churches that he had help to establish. He was very aware that it was not his responsibility to plant the churches, or to maintain and protect them, but that he was just an instrument in Godís eternal purposes.

Paul could rest in the fact that the Lord would cause the increase, and Paul had no doubt rested on this truth because the task that was before him would have been impossible if it had not been for the strength and guidance that was provided by the Lord.

Paul and his companions were continually persecuted by the Jewish leaders from Asia and Greece, yet the Lord protected them in every circumstance and Paul was determined to "run the race" that was set before him.

In Paulís second missionary journey he re-visits a couple cities in Asia, one of which was Lystra where he was stoned and left for dead a few years earlier. He later has a vision that leads him over to Greece and Paul and his companions travel and minister in various cities in Greece (Philippi, Thessalonica, Berea, Athens and Corinth). Later Paul returns to Ephesus and finally to Caesarea and Antioch.
